Falkon uses QtWebEngine to display websites. The interface provides well-known components such as bookmarks, history and tabs, with a quick access sidebar. In KDE Plasma, the design connects to your desktop theme.

The built-in AdBlock extension can stop ads. For additional possibilities, Falkon uses its own expansion system. The Chrome technology in QtWebEngine doesn't mean you can install all Chrome extensions automatically. On Linux you usually receive the browser and its parts via your distribution or Flatpak.

Install the stable Linux version via your distribution or Flathub. Get the corresponding runtime updated and check your main websites.

Privacy

You can manage advertisements and browser data. This does not prevent websites from recognizing your account or IP address. Also check the settings of your search engine and any additional extensions.

The available version depends on the package source. The official KDE release page mentions 26.08.1; Windows packages are offered separately and may be test expenses.

Please note

Keep QtWebEngine and the Flatpak runtime or distribution packages updated. Only a recent Falkon version number doesn't say everything about the updated parts that process websites.

This edition is part of the maintenance round of KDE Gear 26.08.

Falkon 26.08.1 follows the maintenance edition of KDE Gear. There is no separate new user function for Falkon in this round. When updating, keep QtWebEngine and runtime up-to-date; they also determine how websites are processed and security repairs are provided.

Our verdict

Falkon fits especially when your Linux desktop is important in your choice and you are looking for a browser with clear classic features. The connection to Plasma and the built-in blocking make it possible to start without many separate extensions. For those who depend on specific Chrome extensions it is not a direct replacement.

First check your password manager, video services and other important websites. Then watch how your distribution updates the browser and QtWebEngine. Preferably use one well maintained installation source, so you don't get a confusing combination of old and new parts. The added value is here in desktop integration and operation, not in a promise that every chromium function is available.
