Haruna is a KDE media player with mpv as a playback base. You open local video files and operate them via a graphical interface. The playlist can slide over the video, so you quickly move to another file without always opening a separate window.

You decide how keyboard shortcuts and mouse buttons react. You can also skip chapters based on words in the chapter title. This is useful for material containing consistently named intro chapters. For audio, there are settings for ReplayGain, which you can take into account volume ratios between files that contain such data.

Haruna can also open video online via an additional downloader. Their operation depends on the relevant website and the installed components. For your own movies and music you don't need an online library: you keep working with your files and playlists.

Who is it for?

You mainly use Linux and want a video player whose control you can adjust. Haruna fits well if you look at many files in succession or work with chapters and subtitles.

Getting started

Install Haruna via your Linux software store or the Flathub link on the official website. For Windows, KDE refers to a separate build; the Linux release is the starting point here.

Privacy

Local files can be played on your own computer. When opening an online video you connect to the video service. The player can remember recent files and playback positions; take this into account on a shared computer.

Our verdict

Haruna is a good choice if you like mpv but want to perform most of the actions with menus and buttons. Especially the management of playlists, chapters and your own mouse control makes it interesting for regular video watching. To only open a file occasionally many options are not required. Therefore, start with the default settings and only adjust what you are missing while watching. Use the recommended Linux packages to control dependencies and updates via your software management.
