SeaMonkey is an internet package in which you not only open websites, but also manage mail and newsgroups. Composer lets you edit simple HTML pages. The parts share the same app and have a classic interface with menus and toolbars.

You get more than a single browser, but also a different technical basis than the current Firefox. The project takes over security repairs in its own version. Extensions must be suitable for SeaMonkey; a new Firefox extension can't be installed without it.

You want to keep browser, mail and simple web page editing together and are used to classic desktop programs.

Getting started

Download the 64-bit version for your system. When upgrading, first create a profile backup and follow the migration steps if you are using a very old version.

Privacy

Your profile may contain both browser data, email and account settings. Protect that profile and take it with you in your backup. Websites and mail providers continue to keep their own data processing.

Good to know

The current official packages are 64-bit. Modern Firefox extensions and some websites are not easily compatible.

Create a profile backup before migrating from an old SeaMonkey release. Check support for your mail provider and main websites; modern login methods and web apps may vary.

Version history

2.53.24

The browser toolbar, mail filters and calendar get targeted corrections.

Version 2.53.24 places the home page button in the main toolbar. Canceling a filter operation will no longer unintentionally close the entire filter window. Also, the display of weekdays at recurring calendar appointments has been restored and additional security repairs have been taken over from the Mozilla code base.

Our verdict

SeaMonkey is especially useful when you also want to use the mail and editing parts. If you're only looking for a web browser, the extra package will have little advantage. For an existing method with classic menus, the coherence can be pleasant, provided your websites and mail accounts continue to work well.

Check that compatibility before transferring your full profile or mailbox. First make a copy of your data and try the features you need daily. Its own development base means that you don't automatically get the same features as in the latest Firefox. So choose SeaMonkey to combine parts, not to complete interchangeability with modern browsers.
