Pale Moon uses its own Goanna engine and retains a classic desktop interface. You can customize toolbars, menus and themes and install extensions from the Pale Moon range. The program follows its own development path and is not a current Firefox version with just another appearance.

You will notice that difference especially with website features and extensions. A modern web app can expect opportunities that are otherwise or not supported. Choose the package for your system and processor. If necessary, install an appropriate Dutch language package and then check your main websites.

Privacy

You can manage cookies and other browser data, but Pale Moon is not an anonymity network. Extensions and visited websites can process data; assess their access separately.

Good to know

Firefox and Chrome extensions are not just interchangeable with Pale Moon. Linux has a separate 34.3.2.1 correction in this series; Windows and macOS use 34.3.2.

Please note

Check the websites you need every day before switching. The official 64-bit Intel/AMD release requires AVX support. Support for an old operating system does not make that system safe or up-to-date.

35.0.1 Security

You get recovery for slow websites and multiple security issues.

  • A major performance problem in the new CSS:has() support has been solved.
  • XML files are checked more strictly and a crash in WeakRef has been fixed.
  • Several security issues and an error in XSLT output have been corrected.
35.0.0 Security

You get a big update that tries to support modern websites better. Memory management and security have also been modified.

  • New support for, among others, CSS:has(), adoptedStyleSheets and various JavaScript APIs helps with websites that didn't work properly before.
  • Improved memory management allows heavy websites to better release their used resources. A problem with repeated re-formatting of pages could cause prolonged stalling and has been resolved.
  • Firefox compatibility mode reports standard version 140. On Linux, typing responds better to complex pages.
  • The security library NSS has been updated and several vulnerabilities have been corrected. The compatibility adjustments do not guarantee that every website works.
34.3.2 (Windows/macOS)

The release sharpens the processing of fonts and media and improves web code support.

Version 34.3.2 adds URL.Parse(), corrects problems with loaded fonts and includes additional checks for audio, images and video. NSS has been updated for security maintenance. For Linux, 34.3.2.1 has also been released, which fixes problems with the GTK window for opening and saving.

Pale Moon is especially valuable if you deliberately want to maintain a classic browser interface and are willing to assess compatibility by website. For reading only, searching and simple sites, this preference may outweigh new interface functions. For extensive web apps, your own engine is an important point to check first.

Therefore, choose the browser not only because it can start on an older system. A supported operating system and current browserupdates remain necessary. Keep a common second browser available for sites that are not working properly and use only appropriate extensions. Anyone who wants to use all modern services without any problems has more control work here than a mainstream browser.
