GNOME Web, also known as Epiphany, connects to the GNOME desktop. The browser uses WebKitGTK and keeps the operation compact, with the web page as its main component. You can use bookmarks, manage stored data and open websites in a separate app window.

A webapp window is useful for a service you frequently use, because you don't have to find it between regular tabs all the time. The website remains dependent on the same web technology and connection. GNOME Web has its own expansion approach and is not a full replacement for Firefox or Chrome's expansion offer.

Getting started

Install Web via Flathub or the software center of your distribution. Look for Epiphany. After installation, check your fixed websites and set up desired web apps.

Privacy

You can manage browser data, cookies and saved passwords. A separate webapp window does not make a website anonymous and does not change the terms of that service.

GNOME Web is a Linux desktop browser. Not all Firefox or Chrome extensions and website features are available.

51.1 Security

You get security correction for source and read viewing and recovery for bookmarks and history.

  • A vulnerability that allowed unsafe iframes to be loaded via view-source or ephy-reader has been corrected.
  • Searching for bookmarks works again when you look at a tag.
  • Clear in the history window preserves the search field and re-applys the filter. The position of suggestions has also been corrected.
50.6

This version restores a log on bookmark import and fixes two security issues.

Version 50.6 prevents a crash when importing invalid bookmarks. In addition, problems have been solved around code injection when filling in automatically and unpacking XPI extensions outside the intended folder. Also update the corresponding WebKitGTK components via your package source.

Our verdict

GNOME Web is an appropriate choice if you mainly read, search and use a few fixed web services within GNOME. The simple operation prevents the browser itself from requiring a lot of attention. Separate webapp windows can also give an overview when you keep one service open regularly alongside other programs.

Please check that the sites you need work well with WebKitGTK. Especially with extensive web apps, video services and specific extensions, this is more important than the appearance of the browser. Keep another browser available as a supplement and choose a package source that updates browser and runtime. So you profit from the simplicity without unexpected bumping into an indispensable service.
