Gnumeric is a spreadsheet program from the GNOME environment. You use cells, formulas and graphs for calculations and data overviews. The program focuses on spreadsheet work and is not a complete office package with word processor and presentation software.

You can open different spreadsheet formats, but need to check the outcome and formatting when exchanging with Excel. Especially macros, external links and special functions are not automatically interchangeable. For your own calculations you can continue to work in its own format.

Available version and additional parts depend on your Linux distribution. VBA working methods are not simply transferable.

You will get new computing and text functions and better exchange with Excel.

  • New functions include CHI, GAUSS, PERCENTOF and REGEX TEST, REGEXEX EXTRACT and REGExREPLACE.
  • NETWORKDAYS.INTL and WORKDAY.INTL have been added. XLSX exports and compatibility of multiple Excel features have been improved.
  • With the formulas=true option, you can export formulas as text to text and CSV files. Problems with filters and Wayland have been addressed.

You can use more modern search and text functions in worksheets.

Gnumeric 1.12.61 adds XLOOKUP, XMATCH, TEXTBEFORE, TEXTAFTER and TEXTSPLIT. Also problems with date series, search and replace and undo property changes have been resolved. The exchange of function names with XLSX has been improved.

Gnumeric is a targeted choice if you mainly want to calculate and do not need a word processor or presentation program. That demarcation makes it suitable for own tables, analyses and overviews on Linux. You can keep your attention to the calculations.

In business exchange, control is more important than the list of file formats. Compare a few formulas, graphs and prints with the original file before replacing an existing Excel method. If you use ordinary formulas and your own data, Gnumeric can connect well. If macros or company-specific links are indispensable, it is wise to keep the original environment available.
