Déjà Dup focuses on your documents, photos and other personal folders. You choose what you want to save, exclude unnecessary folders and set up a recurring backup. You can use a local drive, an external destination or a supported cloud service such as Google Drive.

The current version uses Restic to save backups. By processing modified data separately, you don't have to re-send your entire collection every time. Recover your files from the recovery view. You don't get a fully bootable system image.

Getting started

Install Déjà Dup via Flathub or your distribution. Select your folders, set the destination and encryption and check the first recovery action.

Privacy

You can encrypt your backup before saving it to the destination. Keep the password separately and check the terms and conditions for cloud storage and access to your account.

Good to know

The app focuses on personal file recovery. Versions and the backup engine used may differ in older distribution packages.

Please note

A backup of your home folders does not replace a system image. Also record files outside the default selection when you need them, and check that the destination is reachable at the scheduled time.

You will get clearer information about storage usage and locked backup destinations.

Version 50.2 shows storage usage for included and excluded folders in the first backup. A notification helps when an encrypted volume needs to be unlocked first. The periodic check with Restic has been improved and recovery with overwriting is back in the Duplicity execution involved.

Our verdict

Déjà Dup is a logical choice if you want to protect documents and photos on Linux and have little need for technical settings. The limited emphasis on system management helps you to make the most important decision first: which folders should be recovered if your laptop fails?

Look beyond the default selection. Files on a second disk or in a different working directory can otherwise stay out of the backup. Choose a destination that may exist apart from your computer and recover a few files after the first task. For a complete repair of your Linux installation, you also need a different device.
