Pika Backup uses BorgBackup to store your personal files in archives. You can set up a local drive or an appropriate external destination. Data already in the archive does not need to be re-saved; this is particularly useful for successive copies of the same folders.

You can plan tasks and browse stored archives. For recovery, copy the required files or folders back with your file manager. Pika Backup is intended for personal data and does not make a complete recovery image of your operating system.

Getting started

Install Pika Backup via Flathub or your distribution, create an archive destination and select the folders and schedule. Open an archive afterwards and check a file.

Privacy

You can encrypt archives and choose your own storage destination. Save the recovery information outside the device from which you back up; without access and key, you cannot read back an encrypted archive.

Good to know

Pika Backup protects personal files and is not a program to restore a full operating system installation.

Please note

Check how many old archives you keep and whether important folders are in the selection. Backup on the same physical drive does not protect you from malfunctioning that drive.

The closing and browsing of archives is more consistent.

Version 0.8.4 prevents repeated detachment dialogs when closing and removes leftover browser statuses. Questions remain visible while using the interface. The app also prevents archive configurations from being deleted while browsing them or an operation is active.

Our verdict

Pika Backup fits when you regularly want to save the same personal folders and later extract a file from an earlier copy. The combination of archives and graphics leaves clearly allows a distinction between your current files and saved moments. That's more useful than just a mirror copy if you find a mistake later.

Pay attention to the retention period in the establishment. Many recovery moments are pleasant, but your destination must be able to contain them. Use a separate disk or external location and practice reset before relying on it. For Linux system recovery, you can complete Pika with a separate solution.
