You create profiles with source folders, a local or external repository and a schedule. Borg provides compression and reuse of data, while Vorta brings together the tasks and archives in a window. You can view previous states and recover files.

The destination can be your own disk or suitable Borg server. A hosted service is optional and has its own conditions. A repository is not an ordinary copy folder: access, storage policy and maintenance are part of the device. On macOS can link archives to request additional macFUSE parts.

Who is it for?

You want control over backup storage and multiple recovery moments, but rather use graphic control than just Borg commands. You are willing to manage profiles and recovery access.

Getting started

Install the appropriate package with Borg support, create a repository and set one profile. Check recovery and storage times before you activate a schedule.

Privacy

You can encrypt backups before storage. Keep password and required key data independently of the source computer. The rights on your repository determine who can modify or delete data.

Good to know

Vorta focuses on Linux and macOS. Optional hosting and additional macOS components are not automatically included in the cloud service.

Please note

The retention periods determine which archives are deleted. Check those settings and restore a file before having older copies cleaned.

This update makes planning and behavior after dormancy more reliable.

A crash of the planner in a deleted profile has been solved. Long planning intervals are better handled. On macOS, an ordinary Vorta session stays active after the window closes and boot memory consumption is reduced.

Our verdict

Vorta fits if you want to save multiple versions of files and choose your own storage. The graphic control makes Borg more accessible, but does not replace a repository's understanding. To copy a separate document only, the setup is more extensive than necessary.

Check a profile from source selection to recover an earlier version. Capture recovery access and review the retention policy before clearing. Those who consider self-storage to be important are given a lot of control; those who do not want maintenance must take that responsibility into account in the choice.
