Tiled

Design game worlds with Tiled. You build maps out of tiles, objects and layers and give parts properties.

Tiled is an editor for cards of games that work with tiles. You use a tile set as a collection of building blocks and thus, for example, create a playing field, landscape or interior. Layers help separate your background, decoration and other parts.

You can link properties to maps, layers, tiles and objects. This way you capture information that your game can read later, such as a type of area or its own object characteristic. The TMX format is part of that workflow. Please check that the game engine you use supports your card format and properties.

Tiled doesn't set all the rules himself. You create the card and associated data; for movement, fights or a complete playable game you also need an engine or own code. So start with a small card that you can load directly into your game before working out a big world.

Who is it for?

You build your own 2D game or learn how levels are built. You want to separate card drawing from the code and use an engine that can process Tiled data.

Getting started

Install Tiled and create a project folder with your tileset. Build a small test card and load it into your chosen engine. Choose on older Macs the separate package for macOS 10.13 to 12.

Privacy

Your cards and tile sets are in your own project folders. Check the license of footage you import; Tiled's license does not automatically give you rights to tiles from others.

Good to know

You need a game engine or your own code to make your card playable. Support for export functions depends on your engine.

Please note

Save tile sets together with your project and check the links when moving. Not every engine supports all card and object functions in the same way.

Advantages

  • You organize maps with layers and multiple tile sets.
  • You can link your own properties to objects and tiles.
  • You can work on the same card structure on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Things to consider

  • You need a game engine or your own code to make your card playable.
  • Support for export functions depends on your engine.

Our verdict

Tiled especially adds value when your card design takes its own step in your game project. You can adjust a level without describing every tile in code. The most important choice is the connection to your engine: test layers, objects and properties in a small example. If that link is correct, Tiled offers a clear place to maintain larger maps.
