Move a photo archive
First, think about where your originals and catalogue are from now on. A database backup only does not automatically contain all photos. After a move check whether albums, labels and file references match. Choose which metadata you store in the image files, especially before sharing photos: location data can tell more than you see in the image.
Compare digiKam with alternatives
Quick browsing, supported formats and batch actions are important for a large photomap. Compare whether the app only displays folders or builds its own catalog. When modifying metadata, please note whether data is stored in the files themselves or only in the app. Compare whether you are looking for exactly the same files or visually similar images. A photo with a different format can be the same content but still form another file. Therefore, view results manually and decide which resolution and metadata you want to save.

Who is it for?
This helps you with large family archives or photo projects that you later want to find on person, date and subject. It suits you if you want to invest time in order. For just a few quick cuts, the catalog environment is more extensive than necessary.
Getting started
First add one photo folder and create a simple label structure. Back up both your photos and the catalog settings.

Privacy
Facial names, locations and comments are personal data even when you add them to your photos. Check what is written in image files or sidecars before sharing. Additional part- or online functions have their own connections. Do not automatically share the complete catalogue when someone only needs some photos.
Good to know
The first reading of a large collection can take time. The catalogue doesn't replace a backup copy of your original photos.
Please note
Automatic recognition can change people. Check suggestions before massive confirmation. Move your archive with attention to the catalog links. A backup of only exported JPEGs does not necessarily contain your full tags, database and original recordings.

Our verdict
digiKam is especially valuable if you want to organize a growing photo archive with albums, tags and search capabilities. You can also use faces and metadata to retrieve images. The biggest profit comes from fixed agreements. Hundreds of automatically added labels are less useful than a limited system that you understand and maintain consistently.
Choose digiKam if finding the problem is: by subject, person or a consistent format. If you just want to narrow down a few photos, a catalog is less important. Preset which labels you actually use and where metadata is stored. This prevents you putting a lot of time in an order that is hard to retrieve outside one installation.
