Step

With Step you build a two-dimensional physics simulation and watch what forces, mass and movement do to each other.

Developer KDE

Version 26.08.1 · Open source · Linux

Step is an interactive physics simulator. You put objects in a scene and add forces or connections. When you start the simulation, the program calculates how the objects move. You can change settings and see instantly what that does to the gradient.

For example, you work with mass dynamometers, feathers, gravity and collisions. Measuring instruments, graphs and tracks help to not only look at the movement, but also compare values. With this you can investigate a question: what happens if you double the mass, change the spring or change the initial speed?

A simulation is a model with assumptions. The result depends on the selected parameters, units and numerical calculation. Step is therefore especially useful for exploring concepts and comparing predictions. It does not replace any real measurement or certified technical calculation. Save different scenes so you can easily compare changes.

Who is it for?

You learn physics, explain forces or want to experiment with simple mechanical systems. Step helps you the most when you want to understand what parameters you're changing.

Getting started

Install Step via your Linux software management or KDE download link. Open an example scene and check the units used before adding your own objects.

Privacy

You can make scenes local and save them. No mandatory online learning environment is required for the simulations. When sharing files, think about which names or comments you have included in a scene.

Good to know

Some physicist foreknowledge helps Focus on two-dimensional models No replacement for real measurement tests

Please note

Wrong units or inappropriate parameters may give a misleading result. Use Step to examine a model, not as the only basis for safety critical calculations.

Our verdict

Step makes abstract concepts visible because you can change one parameter and view the effect directly. This approach works especially well if you formulate an expectation beforehand and then compare it with the simulation. Without that question, it quickly becomes only moving with objects. Start with a simple scene and add measuring instruments when you know what you want to follow. For teaching and self-exercising, this is a clear added value over just a static image.
