You can zoom out to the Earth as a whole and then zoom in on maps for more detail. Marble combines different types of maps and offers possibilities for search and routes. It is useful for geography, viewing historical maps and exploring areas. Availability of online information depends on the services used. For offline use, the necessary card material must be available; do not assume that everything is stored automatically. The current KDE release and older packages for other systems may also differ.

Compare Marble with alternatives

Compare map software on your task: explore locations, analyze map layers or view routes and geographical data. A virtual globe is not a complete GIS environment. Check that your own card files and the data sources you need are supported.

Who is it for?

You use Marble to visually explore geographical information or in education. For current traffic information and daily navigation, a dedicated app is usually more suitable.

Getting started

Follow the current KDE installation route for your system. Check with older desktop downloads which version number and which card services are available in it.

Privacy

Online maps, searches and routes can send data to the chosen card provider. Use locally available material if you want to work without a network connection.

Good to know

Offline maps and online routes are not the same. Prepare map material in advance and check which functions require a network connection along the way.

Please note

Check in advance which map layers are available offline. A calculated route is no guarantee that a road is accessible or that the map is fully up-to-date.

Advantages

  • You can combine cards and a globe.
  • You can explore different types of maps.
  • You can make distances and locations visible.

Things to consider

  • Online functions depend on external services.
  • Offline usage requires preparation.
  • Available packages vary by operating system.

Our verdict

Marble fits well with exploring and learning, especially if you want to compare different map images. For travel planning you need to check the actuality and availability of the data used separately.

The app is especially useful to explore maps and locations without immediately setting up a geographical analysis project. Let your goal determine which layer is suitable: another map image can highlight other information. For offline use, the required content should actually remain available without connection. Anyone wishing to base route decisions on the data should also check current events; a clear atlas view does not confirm the current situation on the spot.
