KStars

You use KStars if you want to go beyond just looking at a star map. It fits with amateurstronomy, education and preparing observations or astro photography.

Install the appropriate Windows, macOS or Linux version. Check location and time zone and update required catalogs before preparing an observation.

You can use the base card locally. Online data sources and equipment connections are separate functions; check which location and connection data you set.

Telescopic and camera controls require supported equipment and an appropriate device. A working star map doesn't prove that your equipment is well coupled.

Check time zone, location and equipment settings before moving a telescope. A software card does not replace a safe arrangement and control of the physical movement space.

KStars is interesting when you want to combine astronomy with planning and later equipment. Start with the sky map and add the technical parts step by step.

The choice is especially interesting if you want to move from exploring to preparing real observations. Start with location, time and a known bright object. Equipment support is only then assessed for the concrete devices you use. For only learning to recognize the card can be enough. More technical possibilities are especially an advantage if you also want to take time for the associated equipment and control.
