Our verdict

OpenOffice can be appropriate if you already have a collection of documents and a trusted working method in this package. For ordinary local documents, the well-known office parts are present. A switch is not only a matter of functions, but also of existing templates and habits.

For a completely new installation we would put it next to a more active alternative. Note document compatibility, available security updates and the features you actually use. Especially in many exchanges with Microsoft Office, a trial of real files is important. Do not only opt for recognition if you miss necessary functionality or current maintenance.
