Apache Directory Studio offers a graphical LDAP browser with editors for LDIF and schematics. You can save connections, search records and make changes to a directory. The program is based on Eclipse and works with different LDAP servers.

This is management software for a directory service, not a personal address book app. Your access rights determine which data you can see and change. The offered 2.0 release uses a Milestone designation; check compatibility with your server and Java environment before using the client in a production environment.

An LDAP directory contains more than one list of names: properties, groups and access rights can be used by other apps. Therefore, start reading and searching before changing values. Always check the server, the base location and the account you are connected to.

Use an appropriate testing environment for larger changes or imports. A syntactically valid LDIF file may still contain incorrect data in content. Limit the rights of daily accounts and save a recovery option before modifying a large set of directory entries.

Our verdict

Directory Studio is useful when you want to examine directory data without manually building up every search. The tree structure and editors make connections visible, but can also invite a quick change with great consequences.

Therefore, start with an account that can only read. Check search filters and export relevant data before adjusting anything. In production use, a backup and clear modification procedure are more important than the ease of the interface. For ordinary contacts or a separate user list, this program is usually too technical.
