Apache JMeter has your test plans built for HTTP, databases, LDAP and mail protocols. You decide which requests are sent and collect response times and errors. It allows you to investigate behavior under tax.
JMeter is not an ordinary browser and does not perform a web page by itself like a visitor using JavaScript. Large tests are preferably run without the graphic editor. The capacity of your test computer and network can affect the measurement, so you should also keep an eye on the load generator.

A useful load test looks like the behavior you really want to measure. Choose representative requests, data and numbers of simultaneous users. A large number of identical applications can reveal a very different bottleneck than a realistic mix of reading, searching and writing.
Also measure the load of the computer that performs the test. If it becomes the limiting factor, the results say less about your server. Only perform tests on systems for which you have permission and prevent test data or heavy applications from accidentally entering a production environment.

Our verdict
JMeter is useful when you want to answer a specific question, for example how many simultaneous requests can handle your own service. Start with a small scenario that matches actual usage. A large number of random requests rarely lead to a useful conclusion.
Also measure errors and server load in addition to the average response time. Make sure your test machine itself is not a limiting factor. Use the results to compare differences under the same conditions. Run load tests only on systems for which you have permission and gradually build up the load.
