LibreOffice is useful for letters, household spreadsheets, teaching materials and presentations. It particularly suits people who value local editing and open file formats. If your daily work involves complex Microsoft templates or macros shared with others, test those before replacing your current tools.

Keep an editable original and export the final version to PDF if the recipient does not need to make changes. Check important documents after converting them.

You can create and save documents locally without uploading them for ordinary editing. Before sharing, check author details, comments and tracked changes. Files saved in a synced folder are still processed by that storage service, even when LibreOffice itself is working locally.

Do not assume full compatibility with every Office feature. Test complex documents before switching suites with your collaborators.

Do not enable macros in unfamiliar documents without checking them. Keep an original before changing file formats. Check tables and page breaks after exporting, particularly if the recipient has different fonts. Opening a file without an error message does not prove complete compatibility.

Its native OpenDocument formats suit documents you want to keep editable over time. You can exchange files with Microsoft Office, but complex layouts, macros and specialised spreadsheet functions need checking. Test the result after saving, as well as when first opening a file.

Base your decision on your most demanding document: a quotation with fixed page breaks, a spreadsheet with specialised formulas or a presentation using your organisation’s fonts. If someone else will regularly continue working in the same files, agree on a file format. For final distribution, a checked PDF is often more predictable than repeatedly exchanging files between different editors.
