Looking for an alternative to Nemo?Compare Q-Dir, Total Commander, Double Commander.Compare alternativesNemo arranges the opening, copying, moving and ordering of files within Cinnamon. Extensions and actions can add additional commands to the operation.
The app also has a role in the Cinnamon desktop. Installation on another desktop therefore requires attention to default settings.
Get more from Nemo
Clear folder structures and recognizable file names often save more time than additional tools. Use the file manager to consciously check sources and destinations, especially when moving to a network drive or replaceable medium.
Remove, move and copy have different consequences. When large operations are done, check that the transfer is ready before disconnecting a disk. Moreover, accessing a folder does not always mean writing or replacing files.
Version and updates
Nemo's package version may vary per Linux distribution. Check the package in your software management: distributions can process repairs without using the same main version number as the developer. Do not mix packages from different distributions without checking the dependencies.
Compare Nemo with alternatives
With file managers, two panels, tabs and batch operations are often the reason to switch. Compare network access and archive functions. Set keyboard shortcuts and removal behavior knowingly, because another operation also makes a difference when copying and moving.

Our verdict
Nemo is a logical file manager when you use Cinnamon. Start with the built-in features and add only actions you understand. A context menu extension can run commands on selected files. On another Linux desktop, it is wise to check which parts are taken over as default.
