Looking for an alternative to Double Commander?Compare Total Commander, Q-Dir, Nemo, TeraCopy.Compare alternativesWith two folders next to each other you can clearly see where files come from and go. Double Commander treats many archives as folders, allowing you to view their content and copy files. You will also get a file viewer, text editor and tool to customize multiple names at once. Tabs help if you often switch between the same locations. The interface is strongly focused on keyboard control and offers many configuration options. This makes the app flexible, but requires more habitation than a simple folder view. Extensions can add additional file types or connections.
Compare Double Commander with alternatives
With file managers, two panels, tabs and batch operations are often the reason to switch. Compare network access and archive functions. Set keyboard shortcuts and removal behavior knowingly, because another operation also makes a difference when copying and moving. For large copying tasks, a clear queue, error messages and checking of the copied content are useful. A copy tool takes over the transfer; a file manager also provides a wider working environment. Check if you want to move or copy before starting the task.

Who is it for?
You use Double Commander when you manage multiple folders daily, rename large numbers of files or like to work with shortcuts. It is a free alternative to a two-panel file manager.
Getting started
Choose the installer or portable version for your operating system. The official release page offers various Windows, Linux and macOS packages; choose the appropriate processor variant.
Privacy
Local file operations do not require a cloud service. Once you use a server connection or plug-in, the rights and data processing of that extension or server also apply.
Good to know
Not every extension works on every operating system. Test a plug-in with your own file types before basing your fixed working method on it.
Please note
When copying, check which panel is the source. Test a rename line for copies; mischosen patterns can change many file names at the same time.

Our verdict
Double Commander fits intensive file management where overview and repeatable operations are important. You get the most out of the app when you learn a few fixed keyboard shortcuts.
The two panels are particularly useful when source and destination must always remain in view at the same time. Try the actions you often perform, such as copying, opening and renaming archives. The active selection must be clear. For sporadically opening a document, the switch is less necessary. For many movements, a fixed panel layout can help to avoid constantly switching between separate windows.
