ksnip is a targeted choice if you want to annotate screenshots without an extensive commercial package. You can explain the recording directly, making it suitable for error messages and short instructions. The basis remains clear as long as you mainly make images.
But check the recording support on your system. Especially Linux display environments may have other limitations. Test a window and area recording before setting the tool as default. Video or extensive manual automation requires other software. For clear separate explanations, ksnip can provide enough, provided the available stable version fits well with your environment.
