Blender
Blender combines 3D modeling, materials, animation and rendering in a free open-source program.

Looking for an alternative to Blender?Compare OpenSCAD, FreeCAD, Unreal Engine, Twinmotion.Compare alternativesYou can create objects in Blender, highlight a scene and render them as an image or animation. The program also includes sculpting and other parts of a 3D working method. That makes it suitable for illustrations, simple product images and learning animation. The many editors and keyboard shortcuts require time to learn. Especially heavier scenes and rendering make demands on memory and graphic hardware. Check the requirements of the current version; older Mac hardware may need another supported Blender sequence. Save material files and linked images to your project.
Compare Blender with alternatives
For technical 3D design, size, parts and file exchange are important. Compare whether you want to build a model with mouse and sketches or describe it through code. Animation and artistic models are subject to different requirements than for a custom made part. For a 3D presentation, you can use a specialised visualization app, a general 3D suite or a real-time engine. Compare model import, material management and desired interactivity. A fast architecture presentation usually requires less programming than a fully interactive app.
| Software | What can it do? | Platform and licence |
|---|---|---|
| BlenderYou are viewing this app | You create 3D models, renders and animations with an extensive creative suite. For technical CAD measurement you use a different method than in a parametric CAD package. | Windows, macOS, LinuxOpen source |
| OpenSCADView this alternative | You describe 3D models with code and parameters. This is suitable for repeatable geometry, but works differently than directly drawing with the mouse. | Windows, macOS, LinuxOpen source |
| FreeCADView this alternative | You build parametric 3D models with sketches and size. This fits with technical components that you want to adjust later. | Windows, macOS, LinuxOpen source |
| Unreal EngineView this alternative | You build interactive 3D worlds with a real-time engine, materials and programming tools. You get a lot of freedom, but you need to build more from the app itself. | Windows, macOS, LinuxFreemium |
| TwinmotionView this alternative | You make images and presentations of an existing 3D design in a visualization-oriented environment. This fits with architecture and presenting designs. | Windows, macOSFreemium |

Who is it for?
You use Blender if you want to create 3D images or animations yourself and are willing to learn the basics. For only a photo crop, a simpler image editor is more suitable.
Getting started
Download the stable or appropriate LTS version for your system. Check the current graphics requirements and use an appropriate previous set on older hardware if necessary.
Privacy
You can build and render scenes locally. External assets, add-ons and render services are separate choices. Check permissions and data sharing before uploading material to a service.
Good to know
The hardware that is sufficient for a simple scene does not need to be able to handle a heavy render. Determine your memory and GPU needs using your own projects.
Please note
Do not open unknown scripts or add-ons without checking. Store project copies at a large version transition and test if used extensions are still compatible.
Advantages
- You get modeling, animation and rendering in one program.
- You can work locally.
- You can expand the M.O. with add-ons.
Things to consider
- The interface and keyboard shortcuts require exercise.
- Heavy scenes can take a lot of memory and calculation time.
- Add-ons and older hardware are not compatible with every version.

Version history
5.2.2 LTS
You get maintenance on the 5.2 LTS series, with solutions for fixers when composing, sculpting and video editing.
- Crashes around the Denoise node, mask brush in sculpting and certain Cycles rener settings have been fixed.
- Grease Pencil strokes do not disappear or merge unexpectedly with signs behind existing strokes. Also, a problem with canceling a transfer has been solved.
- Adjusting retiming at speed transitions in the video editor no longer causes the same runaways or unexpected results.
- When outputing grayscale images, the ICC color profile is correctly processed.
5.2.1 LTS
This release belongs to Blender 5.2 LTS, which includes new possibilities for physics via nodes and online asset libraries.
The current Mac version asks Apple Silicon and macOS 13 or newer. For older Intel-Macs, a suitable older Blender series is another choice.

Our verdict
Blender offers a lot of possibilities if you really want to work with 3D. Choose a concrete first project and check your hardware in advance, so you don't have to learn all the parts at the same time.
Let your first goal determine which parts you learn: modeling, animating and rendering are different tasks. A small scene with an object, material and light already gives insight into the process. Also assess what your computer can handle before building big projects. For a simple photo correction this is a detour. For work in which form, movement and lighting come together, the coherence of these tools is valuable.
