OpenSCAD

With OpenSCAD, you can describe 3D objects in code so that you can customize designs with variables and calculations.

You create a model with shapes and operations such as merge and cutting. Dimensions can be captured as variables, which is useful for a series of boxes, holders or other dimensional parts. OpenSCAD focuses on reproducible geometry instead of free sculpting with the mouse. The fast preview and final geometry calculation are several steps. Check the final running model before exporting a file for 3D printing. The development versions may contain new features that are not in the stable release yet.

Compare OpenSCAD with alternatives

For technical 3D design, size, parts and file exchange are important. Compare whether you want to build a model with mouse and sketches or describe it through code. Animation and artistic models are subject to different requirements than for a custom made part.

SoftwareWhat can it do?Platform and licence
OpenSCADYou are viewing this app You describe 3D models with code and parameters. This is suitable for repeatable geometry, but works differently than directly drawing with the mouse. Windows, macOS, LinuxOpen source
FreeCADView this alternative You build parametric 3D models with sketches and size. This fits with technical components that you want to adjust later. Windows, macOS, LinuxOpen source
BlenderView this alternative You create 3D models, renders and animations with an extensive creative suite. For technical CAD measurement you use a different method than in a parametric CAD package. Windows, macOS, LinuxOpen source

Who is it for?

You use OpenSCAD when you want to design logically and parametrically and not look up to simple code. It fits especially with technical shapes with repeatable dimensions.

Getting started

Choose between the stable release and a development version. Open an example, save your own script and run a final rendering for export.

Privacy

Your scripts and models can stay local. Downloaded libraries and shared designs may need additional files; view the content before you include them in a project.

Good to know

You describe geometry with code instead of modeling everything directly with the mouse. Complex combinations can require a lot of calculation time before the final model is finished.

Please note

Do not confuse a development napshot with the stable execution. Check wall thicknesses, units and the exported model before starting a long print job.

Advantages

  • You capture dimensions in customizable variables.
  • You can build designs reproducible.
  • Your source file remains readable text.

Things to consider

  • You have to be able to describe a model in code.
  • Complex geometry can count for a long time.
  • New functions can only be in development versions.

Version history

2021.01

The stable 2021.01 edition resolves problems with export, search and empty geometry.

There are corrections for 3MF exports and the treatment of some extrusions. New development napshots use a separate set and may have other functions and system requirements.

Our verdict

OpenSCAD is especially useful for designs that you want to systematically vary. For organic forms it is less self-evident, but for fixed parts the textual approach is clearly verifiable.

The textual approach is particularly beneficial if the same part with other sizes has to be recreated. Variables for width, height and wall thickness make such changes explicit. Then check the final model and export in your follow-up tool, such as a slicer. For designs that you especially want to shape on feeling can be code limiting. For systematic variants, it helps to find and re-apply choices.
