Audacity

Audacity is useful for interviews, voice-overs, teaching materials and editing your own recordings. It is particularly suited to deliberate cutting and correction. If your main aim is arranging MIDI instruments or building complete productions with virtual instruments, also consider a digital audio workstation designed for that work.

Make a short test recording first and keep the level meter from clipping. Save the unprocessed recording before applying effects.

Local recording does not require an account. Update checks, error reporting and online features have their own network and privacy settings. Uploading to an audio service is a separate step that sends your recording off the device. Consider that choice when recording conversations with others, and store confidential recordings somewhere with restricted access.

Clipped or very poor recordings cannot always be repaired. Other software is often better suited to extensive music arrangement with instruments.

An Audacity project is different from the audio file you send to a listener. Export to an appropriate playback format and check the exported result. Keep an original recording before making substantial changes. Also listen for background conversations: a microphone may capture more than the intended speaker.

Audacity is a useful choice for recording speech or music and editing existing audio. Work with multiple tracks, cut clips and apply effects. For podcasts or spoken explanations, this gives you control over silences, volume and editing. Quality starts at the recording stage: distortion caused by an excessively loud input is difficult to repair afterwards.

For a spoken explanation, focus on intelligibility, editing and a suitable export format. Start with a short recording using your actual microphone, and listen to quiet sections and loud passages. If the input is already distorted, fix the recording setup before editing. Keep the project alongside the export so you can adjust individual sections later.
