Adobe Acrobat Reader

Reader is useful for manuals, contracts, expense forms and documents on which you need to give feedback. It is also relevant when the sender specifically uses Acrobat forms. You may need fewer features for a quick read, while assembling pages or extensively changing text may require additional software.

Save a completed form under a new name and reopen it to check that your entries have been preserved.

You can open local PDFs on your computer. Uploading a document, creating a sharing link or using an online feature also involves processing by Adobe’s services. Check where you save each file. For business documents, also check for comments, author names and other information that may remain embedded in the document.

Not every button is part of the free Reader features. Extensive editing, conversion and some online functions may require a paid subscription.

An image of a handwritten signature is different from a certificate-based digital signature. Placing a black box over text is also not a reliable way to remove information permanently. Use a suitable redaction feature and check the result. Take up paid offers only if you actually need the feature concerned.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is useful for reading PDFs, adding comments and completing forms. Keep the distinction between Reader and paid Acrobat features in mind: viewing and commenting on a document does not mean you can rewrite all its existing text. Save a completed document as a copy and open it again. Losing required fields or calculations matters more than gaining extra reading features.
