SysLog Freeware consists of a server service and a program to view the notifications received. Devices and apps that support syslog can send their messages to that central computer. This helps to keep events from a router and server together.
The software supports the syslog formats RFC 5424 and RFC 3164. You must set the address of the logserver on each sending device. This is a log collector, not a system that automatically assesses every message as a security incident.

A central log helps when events are related to different network devices. For example, you can compare a disconnected connection to a router notification. That works best when devices use the same time and have identifiable names; otherwise events seem to be wrongly in a different order.
Keep in mind growing log files and choose which devices may send messages. Log lines can include addresses, device names and user data. Just give access to people who need this information and don't keep everything that comes in indefinitely.

Our verdict
A central log server makes sense if you're investigating problems that affect multiple devices. You will then need to log in less often on each router or server separately. The separate viewer keeps collecting and viewing messages clearly separated.
Please note storage and access. Logbooks can grow quickly and sometimes contain usernames, internal addresses or error details. So you can decide how long you'll keep them. For a small network, this is a targeted solution; do not expect a full replacement of a monitoring or detection platform.
