Who is it for?
This is useful for explaining videos, simple reports and combining your own recordings. It suits you if you want to be able to choose technical output settings. For loss-free only cutting out a fragment another, more limited tool may be more direct.
Getting started
Put your source material in one fixed project folder and choose your desired video format at the beginning. Do not move those files while editing.

Privacy
You can edit local media without a mandatory upload. When sharing, check whether subtitles, calls or visible notifications contain personal information. A complete project can refer to more source material than the final video shows. Therefore, share only what the receiver needs.
Good to know
High resolutions and many effects require computing power. The project file alone doesn't contain all your original videos.
Please note
Save the project together with the source files used. Moving can break links. Filters and heavy codecs can burden the preview, while exports have to be assessed separately. If you have multiple sound tracks, check that the same source is not unintentionally heard.

You get security fixes for downloads and improvements for audio, subtitles and the timeline.
- Updates and Whisper downloads for HTTPS errors no longer fall back on HTTP. The verification of certificates and reliable file checks have also been strengthened.
- Audio stays processed longer in 32-bit float. Loading external LV2 audio plugins on Windows and levc hardware encryption via VA-API on Linux have been restored.
- Importing subtitle files is back on Windows. Corrections prevent an unwanted empty frame when connecting clips and damaged audio when copied transitions.

Shoctut is suitable if you want to mount different video and audio formats on a timeline. You can work locally with your source files and finish image and sound with filters. The flexibility requires that you choose project settings consciously. A mix of resolutions and image speeds can be useful, but the final format must fit your target.
Let the desired end file determine how to set up the project. A short assembly with your own image and spoken text gives a better picture than just sample material. After exporting also check the audio and aspect ratio in another player. If source files have different properties, a consistently chosen output is more important than any fragment in its original form.
