Mumble is a voice chat client for groups. You connect to a server and use channels to organize calls. This is useful for games, associations or other groups that mostly need reliable voice communication.

The client and server are separate parts. You can manage a server yourself or use a provider. Microphone settings, push-to-talk and sound level have a lot of influence on the intelligibility and what others unintentionally hear.

Getting started

Install the official Windows or Linux client and set your microphone with the audio wizard. For the current 1.5 line, no ready-made official Mac package is available.

Privacy

The connection to the server is encrypted, but that is not the same as end-to-end encryption between all participants. Trust the server manager to suit your calls.

Good to know

A Mumble server is not delivered automatically by the client. Server providers can have costs and own rules.

Carefully set up microphone activation. An open microphone can transmit ambient noise and private conversations.

Mumble 1.5.915 fixes a memory leak when connecting input devices and a crash loop when restoring window status. The server gets corrections for invalid network packages and Windows-zeroconf. No official Mac package is available for this 1.5 edition.

Mumble is suitable when speech is the main issue and you do not need an extensive social environment. Channels and own server choice give a group a fixed place to talk. This can be clear for recurring gaming sessions or meetings.

The quality depends heavily on the design of participants. Let everyone go through the audio wizard and arrange when push-to-talk is needed. Also, arrange who manages and gives access to the server. For a one-time call, an invitation link in another service may be easier. For a fixed group that wants control over the speech environment, Mumble is a targeted solution.
