GoldenDict-ng is a dictionary viewer for different dictionary formats. You can search multiple sources at once and look at the results together. This is useful if you want to combine a bilingual dictionary and a specialist list, for example.

The app does not automatically deliver a complete commercial dictionary collection. You need to add suitable files and respect their license. Local dictionaries and enabled online sources work differently in terms of availability and privacy.

Put dictionaries in a useful order

First, add a reliable source for the language you use most. Then expand with a specialist dictionary or additional language source. Check with a result from which dictionary it comes: a general translation and a technical meaning can both be correct in a different context. Online resources remain dependent on their provider and your connection.

Getting started

Install GoldenDict-ng and add a folder with legally obtained dictionary files. Have the index build up before you search.

Privacy

Searching local dictionaries can be offline. Online resources receive the searches you have sent to those sources.

You can easily open website dictionaries and better operate the search window.

GoldenDict-ng 26.8.0 adds a context menu to open website dictionaries in your external browser. Alt+W works again in the scan window when the toolbar is hidden. On macOS, a keyboard shortcut will no longer unintentionally open the main window.

GoldenDict-ng is especially valuable if you already have dictionary files or want to deliberately collect your own reference sources. You can find different definitions and translations next to each other without ever opening another app. That helps with language work and specialist terms.

The quality comes from the added content, not just from the viewer. Start with a reliable source and check that formatting, pronunciation files and search results work properly. Then add more dictionaries, otherwise the result quickly becomes unclear. If you are looking for a ready-made complete language service, this approach requires more preparation but also gives you more choice.
