AdGuard Home runs on a device that acts as a DNS server for your network. It compares domain requests to filter lists and can block known advertising and tracking domains. Through a web interface, view your requests and set rules or exceptions.

DNS filtering cannot remove all ads. If advertising and ordinary content come from the same domain, you cannot always block them separately. Devices with their own encrypted DNS setting can bypass your local filter. A careful network configuration is therefore more important than just installing.

DNS filtering works when a device searches for a domain name. This allows you to operate multiple devices without installing a browser extension anywhere. However, it cannot delete a separate ad when delivered via the same domain as the desired content.

Start with a limited number of filter lists and view blocked requests when a service does not work. Allow only the necessary domain instead of completely deactivating the filtering. Devices with their own encrypted DNS setting can bypass the set network resolver.

Version and updates

Version 0.107.79 (Self hosted AdGuard Home installation). The Go version has been renewed and the protection against depletion of system resources at DNS-over-QUIC has been strengthened. You can add comments to the configuration of bootstrap servers. In addition, errors with DNS64 and certain blocked DNS requests have been corrected.

Our verdict

AdGuard Home is interesting if you want to centrally manage filters, for example for devices that do not have a browser extension. You can see which domains are requested and add exceptions when a service is no longer working.

Start with a limited number of filter lists and check problems targeted. Adding more and more lists does not make a network better by itself. Also make sure you know how to restore the DNS setting when the server fails. Do not store request logs for longer than necessary, especially if multiple people use the network.
