This is how you choose the right download page
A large download button says little about the file behind it. Check the provider, execution and origin before installing any software.
Start with the developer
First, find out who makes the software and which domain is included. A known program name in a web address is not enough in itself. Other parties may use a similar name, offer a custom installer or place an unofficial app in a store. So look at the combination of developer, project website and download route.
On SoftNovio, the download button refers to the provider. Also there you keep an eye out: a project can distribute files via another server, app shop or release page. Such a switch does not have to be suspicious, but it must be consistent with the route offered by the project itself.
Make a distinction between content and advertisements
One page may contain several buttons. Not every obvious button is part of the software you're looking for. Read the label and view the target address on a computer before clicking. Updating a generic button with only "Start', "Download' or "Driver' may be an advertisement. Additional download tools are usually not required to retrieve one installer.
Do not be rushed by a web page that claims your computer is infected or needs a new player immediately. A site doesn't just know the full state of your PC. Close such a notification and check the software from the program itself.
Choose the right version
| Choice | What you're paying attention to |
|---|---|
| Windows, macOS or Linux | Choose the package for the system on which you are going to use it. |
| x64, ARM64 or x86 | Check the processor type; 64-bit does not always mean x64. |
| Stable or beta | Use the stable release for daily work. |
| Installer | A portable package often requires unpacking and own update management. |
A source archive is usually not the installer you're looking for. A release page sometimes contains dozens of files, including checksums, signatures and packages for different systems. Read the description before choosing the top file.
What do HTTPS and an autograph say?
HTTPS protects the connection to the website. It does not prove that the creator of the website is reliable or that a file is harmless. A digital signature can help to check the publisher of an installer. Compare the listed publisher with the developer you're expecting. If a signature is missing, it will require further verification; it is not in itself a conclusive judgment.
A published checkum helps determine whether your file matches the file offered. That check has little value if both the download and checksum come from the same forged page. Origin and file checking complement each other.
Also check during installation
Read the windows and select only parts you need. Do not give admin permissions to a file you do not understand its origin. Do not disable your security software because a random download page prescribes it. In the event of a blockade, first look for explanations from the real developer.
If you want an example of a clear project route, check out WinSCP or 7-Zip. With qBittorrent is the official route extra relevant: the project warns of unofficial shopping versions. After installation, check the version number and remove an installer that you no longer need from your download folder.
