Why software updating is important

An update does more than add new features

Software often uses parts you don't see directly: image libraries, video codecs or a component that reads a document. There may be mistakes in that too. As a result, an update can be important while the buttons and windows remain the same. A browser that opens websites and a reader who processes files, get constantly new input to process. You want to keep these programs up-to-date.

Make a distinction between a security update, a maintenance update and a big new version. With a security update, delay is usually undesirable. A maintenance update can solve a specific problem. A large version can also change your working method, file support or extensions. You don't have to treat those three situations in the same way.

Which programs do you check first?

Start with your operating system, browser, email program and software that opens downloaded files. Then look at the apps you use every day. An old program you don't need anymore is better removed than left behind for years. Also check extensions of your browser: updating the browser itself does not automatically update any single extension or linked desktop app.

• Check that automatic updates are enabled where possible.

• Check the version information window with common apps from time to time.
• Check if an app gets any updates for your operating system.

Update from the app or official download route

Preferably use the built-in update function or the app store with which you installed the software. If you download an installer, start with the developer. An advertisement that says your player is outdated is not a reliable reason to run an offered file. Through the app pages of Firefox, LibreOffice and VLC find the corresponding official route.

Save your work before you start

Save open documents and close the program if the updater asks. With a larger transition you can also create a copy of important project files and settings. This is particularly useful in video projects, a note archive or an app with many plug-ins. Returning to an older app version doesn't always help if your file is stored in a new format.

1. Save your work and check your backup.
2. Read the most important changes and system requirements.
3. Run the update through the familiar route.
4. Run the app again, even if you see the same window.
5. Open a representative file and test the function you need.

What if an update gives you trouble?

Write down the version number and describe the action where it goes wrong. Test first with a copy of your file. See if an extension can be the cause and consult the developer's known problems. Do not randomly install an old version of a download site: this allows you to recover a solved security problem.

A regular routine works better than waiting for something to break. Check regularly for updates and plan major transitions at a time when you can test. Thus updating remains a small maintenance task instead of an unexpected interruption.
