WireGuard is VPN software, not a subscription with automatically available servers. You use a configuration of your own server, organization or VPN provider. For example, it allows you to connect safely to your home network or a managed network.

The configuration determines which traffic runs through the tunnel and which DNS server is used. Just install the app doesn't change your internet route yet. Keep configuration files carefully: they may contain private keys that allow access to a network.

Getting started

Install the Windows client and import a configuration from your own administrator or provider. Then test the intended network access.

Privacy

The tunnel encrypts traffic to the other end point. That end point and the further route remain relevant; WireGuard alone does not make you anonymous.

Good to know

The aforementioned version concerns Windows. Other platforms and kernel parts have their own version numbers.

Please note

Do not share configuration with private key. Check that the routes you set correspond to the traffic you want to send through the tunnel.

This release is part of the Windows clientline 1.1. Your existing tunnel configuration still determines the routes and DNS settings; check them after updating with your intended use.

Our verdict

WireGuard is a good choice when the server side is already set. You can then connect to a network or provider with a relatively compact configuration. The app does one clearly defined task: to set up a tunnel according to the settings you import.

For someone who is only looking for a button for a foreign IP address, the service offer is missing. It's up to you what end point you connect to and what traffic goes through. After installation check both accessibility and DNS and routes. This prevents you from thinking that you're protected while part of the traffic stays outside the intended tunnel.
