WinDirStat analyzes your storage and displays the space distribution as folder list and treemap. Large blocks represent files that use a lot of space. For example, you can find old video exports or forgotten archives.

The program does not determine which files can be safely removed. A large system file may be necessary and a small folder may contain important documents. Use the overview to examine and only delete content from which you understand the function.

You can scan multiple separate folders and MTP devices, with extended search filters and less memory usage.

WinDirStat 2.8.0 adds flamegraph, sunburst and Hilbert/Moore views among others. You can set CPU and I/O priorities and cancel hashing. For far-reaching actions, confirmation has been improved.

Our verdict

WinDirStat helps especially before you clean up. You can see what your storage is really about and therefore focus on searching instead of deleting random small files. For large personal folders, the combination of list and blocks is very clear.

Use it as a card of your disk, not as a decision maker. Check with a large file which program it uses and if you need a copy. Start with your own downloads, video exports and archives. For system components, the built-in Windows and program features are a better starting point. This way you keep cleaning up understandable and prevent your space from winning at the expense of working software.
