Picocrypt encrypts files with XChaCha20 and uses Argon2id to derive key material from a password. You can protect a file before saving it or sending it. The recipient must be able to decrypt the file with the correct data.

The original project was archived since September 2025. The existing download remains available, but you cannot rely on future corrections. This is an important limitation when you choose a new fixed encryption mode.

Our verdict

Picocrypt has a clearly defined function and remains relevant if you have already encrypted files with it. A small local tool can be clear for that purpose. The cryptographic choices are documented, but that's not the same as guaranteeing all current and future risks.

For a new fixed working method, the finished maintenance weighs heavily. You want to be able to decrypt important files later and have any problems corrected. Therefore, save the required software and test recovery on a second system. For new users, we would first look at an actively maintained alternative before entrusting their archive to this format.
