Open a cloud safe on a second device
Sync the complete encrypted kluismap and open it via Cryptomator, not by moving single internal files. Check with a test document that both devices see the same contents. Store recovery data in a separate location. The cloud provider stores the encrypted files, but version recovery and availability remain partly dependent on the used storage service.

Who is it for?
You can use Cryptomator for personal documents that you want to store between devices without giving the cloud provider directly readable content. It mostly fits with file storage. For working together in the same document you have to take into account conflicts and the possibilities of your regular editor.
Getting started
Create a small test safe and practice opening, adding and closing. Keep your password and any recovery key away from the safe.
Privacy
Cryptomator encrypts content and file names. This does not eliminate every visible feature of storage, such as size and change patterns. While the safe is unlocked, apps with access to your user environment can access the open files. Therefore, lock after use and also secure the computer itself.
Good to know
Encryption is not a backup. Disposals can synchronize and some mobile apps have separate costs.
Please note
Keep your password and recovery data outside the vault. Encryption does not prevent deletion or damage due to synchronization. Make an independent backup and close documents before locking a safe or moving to another device. Wait for major changes until all files are transferred.
Advantages
- You can use additional encryption on top of your existing cloud storage.
- You work after unlocking with ordinary files.
- File-by-file storage is better suited to synchronization than sending one large modified container each time.
Things to consider
- You're gonna have to keep the access safe.
- An unlocked safe doesn't protect against every app on your computer.
- Synchronization conflicts and missing backups remain issues that do not solve encryption.

Our verdict
Cryptomator suits you if you want to encrypt files before you synchronize cloud storage. You work via an unlocked virtual drive while the storage folder contains encrypted files. This makes it useful for documents you want to bring with you via an existing cloud service. However, you remain dependent on good backups and careful management of your access.
This approach fits if you want to continue using your existing cloud storage, but do not want to offer the content as ordinary readable files. Just think about which devices to open the safe. Check a document there after complete synchronization. For a file that you regularly share directly with others, the safe requires a different method than a common shared folder.
