Mullvad Browser was developed by Mulvad and the Tor Project. The browser tries to reduce the number of features that allow websites to distinguish your installation. You get a private window as a starting point and uBlock Origin for blocking unwanted content.

You use your regular internet connection or a self-configured VPN. The browser does not connect to the Tor network nor does it contain an auto-enabled VPN. You can restart a session using the reset button. Cookies and history are not stored between sessions by default.

Getting started

Choose the stable download for your system and start the browser. If you want to use a VPN, set it separately before browsing.

Privacy

The browser contains no telemetry and limited browserfinger printing. Without a separate VPN, a website will still see the IP address of your connection. A personal account also remains a way to recognize you.

Good to know

A VPN service is not included. The alpha release may differ and does not have the same guarantees as the stable version.

Please note

Many additional extensions or deviant settings can reduce protection against browser recognition. Do not expect saved logins to behave as in a normal permanent browser session.

You will get an updated Firefox ESR base and corrections for security restrictions in the browser.

  • The base has been updated to Firefox 140.16.0 ESR and NoScript to 13.6.33.1984.
  • Problems that allowed WebAssembly to be executed at security level Safer have been addressed.
  • Security corrections from Firefox 156 have been taken over.

The browser base and blocking components have been updated, with additional protection around connections to your local network.

Version 15.0.21 contains Firefox 140.15.0 ESR, uBlock Origin 1.74.0 and an updated NoScript version. In addition, security repairs from Firefox 155 have been taken over and a problem has been addressed where websites could start a WebSocket connection to local network ports.

Our verdict

Mullvad Browser fits if you want a recognizable separate environment for visits where you leave less data. The fixed privacy settings are the main added value. If you immediately add all kinds of extensions and different options, then you work against the idea that users are as similar as possible.

Make a distinction between protection in the browser and protection of your connection. For another visible IP address you need to arrange a VPN yourself; a paid Mullvad account is not necessary for the browser. For sites where you want to remain permanently logged in, please keep another browser on, so that you don't always have to weaken this environment.
