The current version uses UEFI. An error message may be associated with a memory module, settings, the memory controller or other hardware. So the test doesn't simply indicate one broken part. The free and paid editions differ in testing and reporting options.

Our verdict
MemTest86 makes sense if you want to support a suspicion of memory instability. Testing outside the operating system helps to exclude some of the software influences. Especially with new modules or custom memory settings, this gives extra information.
A flawless round does not prove that every possible malfunction is excluded. Run sufficient tests and compare them with standard memory settings if necessary. In case of errors you can then systematically examine modules or settings. Don't change everything at once, or you won't know what the difference was. For a stable computer, this is not a program that you need to use daily.
