With a local copy on your PC, you can control where iPhone files end up. This can be useful with a device change or when you want to save photos outside your cloud account. Pre-determine which data you need and check that that category is supported in your execution.
Preferably save the copy outside the disk on which Windows is located. After the transfer check some photos and other files, including date and readability. The amount of free PC storage and the connection to your phone also determine how smooth a larger transfer is.

FooneTool can be useful if you mainly want to move photos and other personal files between your phone and PC. You get more insight into the files you save than an invisible synchronization process.
First, decide whether you want to copy loose files or to be able to fully recover a device. Those are different goals. For important data, also save a second copy and check some transferred files. Install only the product you need; a repair or unlock program is not required for this task.
