Duplicacy stores backups in snapshots and reuses identical data blocks. You can choose different local and external storage destinations. The command line execution and the web-based desktop interface are individual products with different versions and license terms.

The source code is available, but that does not mean unlimited free use for every purpose. Check the terms and conditions for personal or commercial use and for the chosen interface. Also plan repository checks and a recovery trial.

Separate desktop interface and command line

Before updating, check which Duplicacy version you are using. The web-based desktop interface and command line client have their own version numbers and licenses. So one song from one series doesn't say the other is behind. Test recovery from a snapshot to another folder and save the storage references and any encryption data outside your single computer.

Duplicacy CLI 3.2.5 corrects problems with so-called fossils in OneDrive storage. Also, Swift storage addresses can be better processed when a username contains a @.

Our verdict

Duplicacy is interesting if you want to be able to send backups to different storage locations and limit double data. The snapshot approach helps to recover previous states. You can choose how much control you want to manage yourself through commands.

Make that choice together with the licensing check. The CLI and web interface are not simply two free windows of the same package. In addition, test recovery with the storage you're really going to use. A correct backup message is only sufficient if you get back files as well. For users who want to manage this facility, Duplicacy offers flexibility; for a simple one-off copy it is more extensive than necessary.
