CryptSync connects two folders: a regular working directory and a folder with encrypted copies. You work in the first folder, while the program translates modified files to the second folder. For example, you can put that encrypted folder within your existing cloud storage.

You can also encrypt file and folder names. The default method combines encryption with compression, and the files can be opened with appropriate archive software if you have the password. There is also support for GnuPG when you install and set it yourself.

The synchronization can process changes in both directions. This is useful, but it requires attention: synchronization and a version backup are not the same. A deletion or wrong change can be passed on. Therefore, in addition to the encrypted folder, use a recovery strategy with previous versions.

Who is it for?

You use Windows and want to encrypt files before your cloud service uploads them. You want to keep using your existing cloud storage instead of taking a new storage service.

Getting started

Install the appropriate Windows package and create a test pair with a source folder and empty destination folder. Set your password, name encryption and synchronization direction. Then make sure you can recover an encrypted file.

Privacy

The regular source directory remains unencrypted on your computer. Only the selected target copy is encrypted. Use a separate strong password and enable name encryption if file names are also confidential.

Good to know

The source files remain readable on your computer. Synchronization does not replace backup with version history.

Please note

Check the synchronization direction and test with a separate folder. If you lose the encryption password, you can't just read the target files back.

Our verdict

CryptSync is useful if you are already using a cloud directory and want to store encrypted files in it. The clear folder pair shows where you work and where the protected copy is. The downside is that you have to keep two reels apart: encryption protects the content, but does not automatically protect you from deletion or overwriting. Combine it with version management or a separate backup.
