Carbon Copy Cloner has your backup tasks compiled with a source, destination and own selection. You can copy files to another disk and run tasks at fixed times. On suitable APFS volumes you can use snapshots to save previous states.

The app gives you more control over individual tasks than a general automatic backup setting. On the other hand, you have to choose which files, exclusions and recovery moments you need. Don't go on a modern Mac without checking out an instant bootable copy; file recovery and restoring macOS are different steps.

Who is it for?

You use a Mac and want to decide which data goes to which disk, with separate tasks and capabilities for previous file versions.

Getting started

Download the appropriate CCC version for your macOS version. Grant the required file access, set a source and separate destination and check an initial recovery action.

Privacy

You decide your own backup destination. Secure external drives and network access, because a copy may contain the same personal data as your Mac. Check which cloud files are actually available locally.

Good to know

CCC 7 requires macOS 13.1 or newer. Older Macs use separate older issues. A copy is not a directly usable boot disc in each configuration.

Please note

Prepare recovery on your Mac and do not assume that every copy is instantly bootable. Snapshots on the same disk do not replace an independent copy when that disk fails.

You will get corrections for task settings, NAS connections and installation media creation.

  • Repeating the unintentionally enabled task setting on login will be disabled when updating from the relevant 7.2-builds. Turn her back on if you want to.
  • A possible fixer when connecting to a NAS after an earlier AFP attempt has been solved. With AFP volumes you get advice to use SMB.
  • The installation media assistant takes into account Tahoe's greater space needs. Time limits for tasks follow changes to the time zone.

You can also start backups on file changes to a network drive. Start-up backups get incremental updates under conditions.

  • When monitoring for file changes, your target disk does not need to be continuously linked. A NAS can now also serve as a destination.
  • As long as the macOS version remains identical on source and destination, bootable backups can be incrementally updated while maintaining snapshots.
  • After a macOS update, CCC asks by default to delete and clone the destination to also update the operating system. Please take this into account when planning backup.
  • For email notifications you can log in via Microsoft with OAuth. The settings window has been updated.
7.1.6

You can search snapshots more specifically and the update check is further tightened.

Version 7.1.6 adds a search button to snapshots and improves the buildup of the search index. The updater uses a helper and checks update archives with ED25519 signatures. The update of bundle sizes shown by Finder has also been improved.

Our verdict

Carbon Copy Cloner is especially interesting if you want to manage multiple backup tasks on your Mac and choose exactly what is stored where. Think of a separate copy of your photo library and a wider reserve of your user files. That control does require that you understand exclusions and destinations.

Use snapshots to recover previous data, but keep a copy outside the source disk. Review the app on the recovery you need: restoring a deleted document requires something other than being able to work again after a failed Mac. Check that difference before buying a license and replacing your existing backup.
