Superduper! 4 works with copying tasks in which you capture the source and destination. A full copy with pre-erase is available free of charge. With a registration you can schedule tasks and use Smart Update, so that an existing copy is updated on the basis of changes.

Smart Update brings the destination in line with the source. This also means that removals can be taken over. Therefore, do not use such a current copy as the only way to recover deleted files long ago. The current version works on macOS Sonoma 14 and newer; for older systems there is SuperDuper! Classic.

You want a copy of your Mac on an external drive and like to manage a source and destination in a fixed task.

Getting started

Download SuperDuper! 4 for macOS 14 or newer. Choose a separate target drive, check the task description before execution and then check that you can read back files.

Privacy

You can keep your copy on your own storage. Protect that drive from unauthorized access and check that your desired encryption is also properly arranged at the destination.

Good to know

The free possibilities are more limited than a registered installation. APFS Time Machine volumes cannot be transferred as an ordinary copy.

Please note

With 'Erase, then copy' the destination is deleted first. Check the disk name carefully. Smart Update can delete files that are no longer in the source; save a separate history for previous versions as well.

  • You will receive more targeted notifications if the server is not accessible, a password is refused or permissions are missing.
  • Scheduled copies after awakening better wait for slow network connections and try to reconnect.
  • Corrections for Samba servers improve copying read-only folders and saving file dates.

  • New sparsebundles get a block size that fits better with the total size. This does not automatically change existing images.
  • You can use a disk copy as a source and choose to delete images and then copy them. Already linked images are better recognized.

Our verdict

SuperDuper! is useful if you deliberately want to maintain a current copy on another disk. The distinction between a complete wipe-and-copy job and Smart Update is more important than the number of settings. First, choose how you want to use the copy later and which data may disappear at the destination.

For daily automatic tasks you have to take into account the paid functions. Combine a current copy with a method that also stores older file versions, for example when you notice an error only weeks later. In addition, check the recovery on your own Mac and keep at least one reserve separate from the computer that protects you.
