UniGetUI brings package management to a graphic window. You search for software, view installed packages and start updates via the linked package administrators. The program was previously called WingetUI, but now focuses on more than just Windows Package Manager.

You can see the progress of installations and updates follow and view the output of a command. This helps when an update fails or a package has additional installation options. In the current release there are downloads for Windows, macOS and Linux; the available package administrators differ by operating system.

UniGetUI is not the publisher of all the software you find with it. The package source determines which version and installer are available. Therefore, check package name, publisher and source before installing. Two results of the same name from different sources do not need to use the same installation or maintenance route.

You can schedule maintenance and determine whether updates are automatically installed. The detection of updates on Dutch-language Windows installations has been improved.

  • You set separate schematics for update checks, automatic installation and local or cloud backups, including attempts and maximum waiting times.
  • You can only update selected packages automatically and manage shortcuts in the Start menu from one window.
  • WinGet finds and checks packages better on Windows with a different viewing language than English. A first scan lacks fewer updates by refreshing the package index.
  • PowerShell commands and importing settings are better protected against unsafe input.

Our verdict

UniGetUI is useful if you want to centralize software management and still want to be able to see what's going on. The log window and the source information are more important than a button to update everything. Start with some packages of which you know their origin. This prevents you from using multiple maintenance routes or accidentally replacing a deliberately fixed version.
