Tails is a portable operating system. You start the computer from the USB stick instead of the normal installation. For data you want to keep, you can consciously set up storage.

Tails reduces certain traces, but does not guarantee anonymity against any threat. Accounts, shared data and compromised hardware remain important.

A separate system from USB separates your session from the normal Windows or Linux installation. Before use, check how storage and any permanent data are set. What you save during a session is not automatically available after closing.

Tor reduces certain forms of traceability, but your own behavior remains important. Signing into a personal account makes that account recognizable. Check updates and follow the procedure of Tails for installation and verification of the system image.

Version 7.12 (Tails system image for USB or ISO). Released on 03-09-2026. Tor Browser has been updated to 15.0.21 and Electrum to 4.8.1. New firmware packages improve the support of graphics cards and wifi. Tails will switch to a biweekly release cycle with this release. Choose upgrade with an existing USB installation if you want to maintain permanent storage.

Getting started

Follow the Tails USB installation manual and verify the download. Start the computer from the stick and test hardware and any permanent storage.

Privacy

Tor and temporary sessions limit traces, but what you publish or connect to accounts remains recognizable.

Tails fits when you need a separate working environment and understand the limitations. Follow the project installation and verification steps and test start on your own hardware. Pre-determine which data should remain after closure. For ordinary daily work with many fixed apps, this method requires more preparation.
