Squoosh is a web app that compresses images and looks at the result right next to the original. You choose an output format and adjust settings such as quality and dimensions. The comparison helps to look not only at the number of kilobytes, but also at edges, text and details in the image.

For a website, reducing to the required dimensions is often as important as the compression setting. A large picture shown as a small card does not need to be supplied in full camera resolution. However, check the result on the actual display size and on text or logo strips also on sharp edges.

The image processing is done locally in your browser. You download the result as a new file and keep your original separate. Squoosh is especially suitable for careful evaluation of single images; for hundreds of files in succession, a batch program or an automated workflow is more convenient.

Who is it for?

You want to reduce one or a few images for a website or email and assess how much quality you submit.

Getting started

Open Squoosh, load an image and set the desired size first. Then compare the compression and download the result under a recognizable new name.

Privacy

Your image is processed locally and does not need to be uploaded to an image compression server. Visiting the website remains an ordinary network connection.

Good to know

Less suitable for large batches. Compression can cost visible details. Browser memory limits very large images

Please note

Reduce and compression with loss cannot be undone from just the end file. Save your original and check transparency when changing size.

Our verdict

Squoosh helps you make a targeted choice between file size and image quality. Especially the direct comparison prevents you from choosing a low quality that only stands out after publication. It is not a complete photo editor nor a management program for an entire collection. Use it for the last optimization step and save your source image for future formats.
