Edit a whole photo folder without losing originals
For a batch, select a few representative photos: a lying, a standing and an image with small text. Let IrfanView save the result to another folder. Check ratios, quality and file names before processing the complete series. Repeat saving as JPEG can cause additional quality loss, even if the dimensions remain the same.
Compare IrfanView with alternatives
Quick browsing, supported formats and batch actions are important for a large photomap. Compare whether the app only displays folders or builds its own catalog. When modifying metadata, please note whether data is stored in the files themselves or only in the app.

Who is it for?
This is helpful if you check Windows images, scan or prepare files for mail and websites. It fits with recurring simple tasks. Check the license when you use the program in business; free private and educational opportunities do not automatically mean free commercial use.
Getting started
Test batch operation on a few copies. Use a separate output folder so that your photos are stored in the original quality.
Privacy
You work with files on your computer. Images may contain location data and other metadata relevant to sharing. Therefore, not only view the visible image, but also the output options. Install plugins from the intended source and only for features or formats you need.
Good to know
Free use is subject to conditions; for business use a license may be required. Plug-ins should fit your installation.
Please note
Plug-ins should match the 32 or 64 bit edition used. Save originals before running batch conversion or rename. An incorrect numbering or output directory can hit many files at once. Also check on scans if text remains readable after shrinking.

Our verdict
IrfanView is suitable if you want to open many images and perform simple operations in series. The focus is on viewing, converting and renaming. That makes it useful for a collection of scans or photos. It is less focused on an extensive composition with many editable layers than a full graphic editor.
For repeatable tasks such as viewing, renaming and reducing scans, the targeted approach is useful. Record the output dimensions and name line before processing an entire folder. Keep the originals separately. If you want to build individual photos with many separate parts, other tools are more important than batch speed or support for many open formats.
