SimpleScreenRecorder is a Linux display recorder with a step-by-step device. You choose what you want to record and set output and sound. Profiles can help to re-use a known combination later.

The recorder targets X11. A modern Wayland session does not automatically offer the same access to the screen. Therefore, check your desktop environment first. For video editing after the recording, use a separate editor.

Before checking your graphical session

First check if your Linux desktop is using an X11 session. SimpleScreenRecorder is focused on this and does not automatically work the same under Wayland. Use Maarten Baert's official project page or your distribution package for installation: the maker explicitly warns that simplescreenrecorder.com is not part of the project. Then make a short trial recording with the desired sound.

SimpleScreenRecorder 0.4.4 includes smaller improvements, error corrections and translation updates. The release does not add general support for native Wayland recordings; use the recorder within a supported X11 environment.

Our verdict

SimpleScreenRecorder is useful if you are consciously working with an X11 desktop and want to choose recording settings yourself. The stepwise device helps to view source and output separately. For recurring recordings, a saved profile can be useful.

The name doesn't mean that it works without a hit on every modern Linux session. First check if you're using X11 and test sound and image. On Wayland, a recorder that supports the right portals is usually a better starting point. If your environment fits, SimpleScreenRecorder can still perform a clear recording function; do not expect complete editing or streaming studio.
