NetGuard is a firewall for Android that uses the local VPN function of the system. This allows the app to allow or block connections from other apps. You set up Wi-Fi and mobile data separately, so an app can connect at home for example but not on the go.

This is not a VPN subscription with a remote server. The VPN designation in Android here means that NetGuard can filter local network traffic. This usually prevents you from using another VPN app that needs the same Android VPN device at the same time.

Start with a few apps that you want to limit network usage. Blocking system components can disrupt notifications, synchronization or login. Advanced features such as detailed logs and additional filters are part of the paid Pro options. The base is usable without that extension, but check which function you really need.

Getting started

Download via the official NetGuard links. Allow the local VPN connection and first change one app line. Test Wi-Fi, mobile data and notifications before blocking more rules.

Privacy

The filtering is done locally. NetGuard does not send your traffic via its own VPN server and the maker does not mention tracking or analysis. A permitted app can still send data to its own provider.

Our verdict

NetGuard gives you more control than a general on-off button for mobile data. The separate rules per app are especially useful with software that connects unnecessarily often. The limitation is in Android's VPN mechanism: if you already use a VPN service, then you have to choose or find another combination. Adjust the firewall step by step and test important notifications after each larger change.
