MarkText combines ordinary Markdown files with an editor that makes many formatting immediately visible. This means that you need to switch less between source code and preview. The program supports, among other things, tables, code blocks and different writing modes for concentrated works.

This is useful for manuals, notes and documentation that later end up on a website or in a project. You will continue to work with Markdown: the program is not a replacement for a word processor that allows you to compose each page accurately. Also check how the Markdown variant of your final publishing environment deals with additional features.

Save images along with your document and check the links when you move files. A document that looks good on your own computer can miss images if you only send the text file to a recipient. Test an export on the device or platform on which you will use the result.

Getting started

Download the official release for your system. Open a test document with a table and image and check how the file is displayed outside MarkText.

Privacy

You work with local files. The privacy of synchronized folders or embedded external images also depends on the services you use yourself.

No precise page layout. Images must accompany your document. Platform packages cannot be signed

Our verdict

MarkText is attractive if you want the portability of Markdown without a constantly visible source code view. It remains sensible to check an example in the environment where you publish, as not every Markdown expansion is processed the same everywhere. For loose writing, the design is clear; for complex publication projects or shared editing workflows a more extensive tool can fit better.
